California rarely afforded a quiet body of water anywhere, lakes, beaches or otherwise. One of the best parts of moving to Washington State, a 1980’s bride, was visiting water resources found throughout the state, where the square footage allotment per person is so much higher.

I found it still true, a recent trip to a friends rustic waterfront property on Lake Kachess, generational family cabin cluster developed in the 1920’s, proved to be yet another opportunity to enjoy another minimally used water feature. A short drive from the Wenatchee Valley, the simple recreational life contrasts sharply to waterfront communities down lake, modern amenities, expensive architechnical designs, a formal clubhouse, and property covenants.

Our kayaks skimmed across the quiet midnight water while the full moon overhead felt luxurious, and could not have been any less amazing then some million dollar recreation technique. The ripple of light dancing across the waves sprinkled what looked to be diamonds shimmering in the moonlight.

Early morning broke silence with awakening birds, fish, squirrels & chip monks foraging their daily provisions. Temperatures remained comfortable as we escaped statewide highs, with gentle mountain breezes.

History shows a much lower lake, massive cedar trees, stumps now protruding from the shoreline altered with water holding practices for surrounding areas needing captured snow run off.

Time stands still paddling in and out of rocky coves, feeding resident wildlife, candlelight dinners, and lakeside quietness surrounding our mind and persons. The daily to-do list may refuse to shorten, but far away its grip lessens, and that folks, is what vacation is all about!
